Gov. Sanford rents beach house, claims it as residence

This is rich.  Pay close attention to the 14 day rule interpretation.

How many rich and powerful people claim an expensive beach house as their primary residence but rent it out and live somewhere else, in order to get the 4% rate?

the rich get richer and the poor get babies (or massive credit card debt).  it's the american way.

I believe Mark Sanford represents the worst that SC
has to offer in leadership...

However, the real culprit here is the little b..., wife
who, as you see in the article, handles the business
end of the family...She is the one who filed and
followed thru on the taxation situation regarding the
house..

It is ok to elect a republican as governor, but this
outsider is dangerous and destructive to our state..

My God, what will it take for SC to figure him out..
Go Jakie..and split the ticket..Jakie could take as many
as 12 percent of the vote away from Sanford..

And most likely by a class of people who can't even spell his name (or theirs).

I like the way Governor Sanford handles our tax dollars.  I don't like the way he handles his personal business.

Is this Sanford's only SC residence?

If so, why shouldn't he get the lower rate?

Let's say Marty gets a computer Job in columbia that will last for a year. The company who hires him will provide his family with a place to stay. That company is paying a higher rate on the property.

Marty doesn't want to sell his house because he'll be back in a year  so he rents it out, It still is his primary residence, he doesn't own a second home. He's not double dipping because he only gets the lower tax on one home. the Government on the other hand is double dipping.

Is this an issue of primary vs. secondary ownership, or type of use?  Let's say someone owns a house, rents it out, but rents a place to live somewhere else, or lives in another state.

Doesn't it boil down to the actual use of the property?  Isn't that what the 14 day threshold establishes?

Its an issue of paying taxes!

Why should you get to pay less % than another person?

Frankly, taxes on property have ruined the American dream. You don't own anything anymore, because every year you owe more money on that property. You don't pay, the Government  takes.

The arguement about business vs private use is a joke too.

Anybody who thinks businesses don't pass on those tax burdens to the consumer has been inhaling Clinton's second hand smoke!

In response to "guest", it's not Sanford's only residence, in fact; it's not Sanford's only beach residence.   ::)

Guerry Greene takes a page out of the Sanford playbook. Guerry owns a house on Pawleys Island. Rents it out for big money and then claims it as his primary residence to get the lower tax rate and run for elected office in Pawleys Island. And the local press gives him a pass. You can count on the Georgetown Times to cover for the people they like and attack the people they hate.
