City Councilman Tupelo Humes says steel mill is done
« on: May 18, 2021, 01:05:03 PM »
In a interview posted on a local blog City Councilman Tupelo Humes says the city must start planning now to redevelop the steel mill site. He says the mill is finished and there must be new light industrial put on the old site. So when will they get started?

There is a large stack of railroad ties and a pile of the sort of stones used as a bed for railroad tracks behind the fire station at Prince and Fraser.  I hadn't noticed them before.  In addition, Front Street has been closed between Fraser and Dozier Streets.  This combination of events creates the appearance that improvements of the track bed leading into (and out of) the steel mill are about to be made.  Reinforcement or strengthening of this basic infrastructure would be important if there were plans to move heavy industrial equipment (or even a lot of scrap metal and deconstruction debris).  If, on the other hand, there are no plans afoot to move a bunch of heavy stuff around, out or into the site, closing the street and improving the track bed would seem like a big a waste of time, energy and money.

My idle speculation:  Something is afoot.  What?  I don't know.

In the good old days James E. Sanderson and his angry son would have come on here and told how racist we are for talking about the mill being shut down. They would have also told us what was going on with the railroad. But they have gone silent since the last closure. They got their money to shut up? Anyway when will someone besides Tupelo have the courage to say tear it down?

The buzz at breakfast this morning was there is a new buyer for the mill? Who in the hell would sink another dollar into that place? Unless the new suitor has figured out a way to cash in on grants and tax write offs like the current crowd did.

Tupelo Humes is running up and down the west end screaming there is a new buyer for the steel mill. Wishful thinking. The two biggest players in the industry could not make it go. But there is a chance another suitor might go after that tax money and rebates SC will give away to keep the employees on the payroll. We might see it rise from the ashes one more time?

Mr. James E. Sanderson Jr will be looking for all of you mill haters real soon. The big announcement will make you mill haters very upset. The Steel Workers will be back making steel soon.

Is that soon like the last time James Sanderson told us? Over four years went by before the last group was able to get enough tax credits to reopen only to shut it down after they got all the credits?
