The steel mill has applied to DHEC for a new air quality permit allowing it to resume operations. The period of public comment on this application is now open. The deadline for written comments is December 8. Those wishing to oppose the issuance of this permit must do so in writing. I have done so, objecting because (1) the city's zoning ordinance no longer allows "heavy industrial use" of the property since those operations stopped in April, 2020 for reasons other than a labor dispute (the only exception in the time limit preceding an automatic change in the zoning status of the land) and (2) insufficient technological improvements have been made and the "best available technology" as required by law would not be used, resulting in release of hazardous or toxic "electric arc dust" into the air.
Republicans, tell your newly elected representatives on city council of this development. Democrats do the same. It is time for them all to step forward. No more hiding in the tall grass.
